India Conducts Massive Defense Mock Drill Across 33 States on May 7

On May 7, 2025, India will conduct a large-scale nationwide defense mock drill, the first since 1971, to prepare civilians and government agencies for emergency situations like war or hostile attacks. This civil defence exercise will take place at over 250 locations across 33 states and union territories, including major cities such as Delhi, West Bengal, and Punjab.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed state governments to organize these drills to test and improve the readiness of civil defence systems. The exercise will involve sounding air raid sirens to simulate an attack, testing communication links with the Indian Air Force, and checking the functionality of control rooms. It will also include training civilians, students, and volunteers in safety measures, evacuation plans, and blackout procedures to protect critical installations.

Various agencies will participate, such as State Disaster Management Authorities, police, fire and rescue services, health departments, and local administrations. The drill aims to ensure effective coordination among these groups and enhance public preparedness for any crisis.

Alongside the civil defence drill, the Indian Navy will conduct a missile firing exercise off the coast of Karwar, Karnataka, on the same day. This exercise will run from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM IST over a 390 km range in the Arabian Sea, focusing on maintaining operational readiness and maritime security.

This nationwide mock drill reflects India’s commitment to strengthening its defense readiness and civil protection mechanisms in the face of evolving security challenges. It also serves as a reminder for citizens to stay alert and cooperate during such exercises to enhance national safety.
