PM Modi to Inaugurate Chenab Bridge, the World’s Highest Railway Bridge, on June 6
India is about to make history with the grand inauguration of the Chenab Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir. On 6 June 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially open this engineering marvel, which is now the world’s highest railway bridge. This event is not just a milestone for Indian Railways but also a proud moment for the entire country.
What Makes the Chenab Bridge Special?
The bridge is built over the Chenab River in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. It stands at a breathtaking height of 359 meters (1,178 feet) above the riverbed, making it even taller than the Eiffel Tower. The bridge Chenab Bridge stretches 1,315 meters (4,314 feet) across a deep gorge, connecting the Kauri and Bakkal areas. Its main arch span is 467 meters long, and the entire structure is made of steel and concrete, designed to withstand harsh weather, strong winds, and even earthquakes.
The Chenab Bridge is a crucial part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project. This ambitious project aims to connect the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India by rail for the first time in history. For decades, traveling in and out of the region has been a challenge due to its mountainous terrain. The new rail line, including the Chenab Bridge, will make travel much easier and help boost the local economy.
A Symbol of Engineering Excellence
Building the Chenab Bridge was no easy feat. The region is known for its tough geography and seismic activity. Special blast-proof steel and advanced construction techniques were used to ensure the bridge’s safety and durability. It can withstand wind speeds up to 260 km/h and is designed to last at least 120 years.
The inauguration is also part of a larger celebration marking PM Modi’s 11 years in office. Along with opening the bridge, Modi will flag off the first Vande Bharat train between Katra and Kashmir, bringing modern rail travel to the region for the first time. The local administration and Indian Railways are making all the necessary arrangements to ensure the event goes smoothly.
The Chenab Bridge is more than just a railway bridge—it’s a symbol of New India’s strength, vision, and ability to overcome challenges. It will connect people, open new opportunities, and stand as a proud testament to what Indian engineers can achieve.
